Essential Oils or Fragrance Oils? Why Professional Scenting Uses Fragrance Oils
Essential oils are popular in Indonesia, and many business owners ask whether they can use them in a commercial diffuser. It's a fair question. Here is how the two types of oil differ, and why professional scenting normally uses fragrance oils.

What essential oils are
Essential oils are extracted from plants: leaves, flowers, peel, bark or resin. Lemongrass, eucalyptus, citrus and lavender oils are familiar examples. Each oil comes from one plant, and its smell depends on the harvest, the region and the extraction method.
What fragrance oils are
Fragrance oils are compositions created by fragrance specialists. They can combine natural materials, including essential oils, with other ingredients to build a balanced scent. Oils made for diffusion are formulated to atomise cleanly in cold-air machines.
Why commercial scenting uses fragrance oils
Consistency.
A fragrance oil is made to the same formula every time, so the scent in your lobby doesn't change from one refill to the next. Essential oils can vary from batch to batch.
Made for the machine.
Cold-air diffusers need oil with the right consistency to break into a fine mist. Oils not made for diffusion can clog nozzles or smell flat.
A complete scent.
A single essential oil is one note. A fragrance oil can be composed with a beginning, a heart and a base, so it feels rounded in a large space.
A wider range.
Many scents businesses want, such as clean linen, soft woods or a signature blend, can't be made from a single plant oil.
Natural doesn't mean gentler.
Some essential oils are strong and not everyone likes them in shared spaces, and some are unsuitable around pets. Whatever the oil, the right level and placement matter most.
Where essential oils still make sense
Essential oils have a place in small, personal spaces and in some spa treatments, where a therapist uses them in a controlled way. For scenting a whole business space every day, consistency and machine performance usually matter more.
How DuraScent approaches oils
DuraScent doesn't sell oils. The fragrance oil is part of our service: our Scent Library of 40+ fragrances comes from European fragrance houses, and the oil is chosen for cold-air diffusion. Our team refills it, so the scent stays the same, and if your space has pets or sensitive visitors, tell us during the survey and we'll recommend a suitable scent and setting.
Scent supports atmosphere and impressions. It isn't a therapy or health product.
